Energy

The rapidly evolving energetic landscape of the GCC, the ability to capture accurate data is paramount. At Technometer, we leverage cutting-edge aerial photogrammetry and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to transform how energy projects are planned, monitored, and maintained.

While traditional surveying methods can be time-consuming, hazardous, and often lack the granular detail required for modern green energy infrastructure, drone technology is a gamechanger for the renewables sector because it solves these challenges by providing high-resolution spatial data in a fraction of the time.

By using high-resolution cameras and RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) positioning, we generate Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and Digital Surface Models (DSM) with extreme precision. What used to take weeks on foot can now be mapped in hours. This accelerates the Pre-construction Site Analysis and keeps projects on schedule.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) plants inspections

In the solar industry, even a 1% increase in efficiency can translate to thousands of dollars in annual revenue.

At Technometer, we provide end-to-end aerial intelligence – from the first site assessment to long-term Asset Performance Management (APM): before a single panel is installed, drones provide detailed topographic maps to optimize panel layout and calculate shading risks; post-installation, thermal sensors can identify “hotspots” or defective cells that are invisible to the naked eye.

  1. Drone Inspections in Pre-Construction Phase:

Our drones provide the high-resolution data needed to generate high-density 3D Point Clouds and Contour Maps (at 0.5m intervals or less) to help engineers design mounting systems that follow the natural slope, minimizing costly earthworks.

By creating accurate Digital Elevation Models (DEM), we help developers predict water runoff and design effective drainage systems to prevent soil erosion and equipment flooding.

We map nearby obstacles (trees, buildings, or power lines) to simulate sun paths and calculate precise “inter-row spacing”, maximizing energy yield per hectare.

  1. Drone Inspections during Construction Phase:

We overlay drone-captured orthomosaics onto CAD design files to ensure that trackers and piles are placed exactly according to the engineering plan.

Through our drones we can rapidly calculate the volume of excavated soil or gravel on-site for better logistics and cost control.

  1. Drone Inspections for Operations & Maintenance (O&M):

This is where drone technology offers the highest ROI: manual inspections of a 50MW plant can take weeks; a drone can do it in a single day.

Additionally, using high-resolution radiometric thermal sensors we can identify anomalies at the string, module, and cell levels, and pinpoint specific issues such as “hotspots” caused by internal cell failures or bypass diode malfunctions, identify areas where dust, bird droppings, or vegetation are obstructing panels, and detect structural damage invisible to the naked eye.

Every defect is delivered with precise GPS coordinates, allowing technicians to walk directly to the faulty panel, reducing “mean time to repair” (MTTR).

Case Study:

Client: Major Renewable Energy Actor in the UAE

Scope: Conducting thermal inspection in a 62 hectare-photovoltaic plant, by utilizing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle mounted with thermal and optical camera.

Results: Through our drones mounted with thermal & optical camera we were able to gather all the necessary data to let the Client elaborate a report.

We use our drones to identify defects and measure dust concentration in a timely manner: this is essential for developers, owners, and operators of solar power plants who wish to quantify and minimize power losses due to dust accumulation and confirm the underlying performance of the power plant to determine if and when cleaning.

Drone inspections provide an economic payback as drones can cover a vast area in a short time.

Drones eliminate the need for surveyors to navigate treacherous terrain or climb high structures, significantly reducing on-site risk.

Reducing man-hours and eliminating the need for heavy machinery or manned aircraft leads to a substantial reduction in operational costs.

Other uses that drones can have in the Energy industry:

  1. Wind Energy

Drones facilitate high-definition visual inspections of turbine blades and nacelles. Photogrammetry allows for the creation of 3D models of the site to plan access roads and crane pads during the construction phase.

  1. Hydroelectric and Geothermal

Mapping large watersheds or monitoring geothermal plant deformation requires the large-scale overview that only aerial surveys can provide efficiently.

While green energy is the future, the stability of our current power infrastructure relies on rigorous maintenance and precise surveying. Our drone services bridge the gap between traditional utility management and the digital age.

  1. Power line monitoring and pylon inspections:

Aerial photogrammetry allows us to identify structural fatigue, detect corrosion, missing bolts, or bird nests on pylons without requiring a line shutdown.

We can also use 3D point clouds to calculate the exact distance between trees and power lines, preventing wildfires and outages caused by “encroachment”.

All this leads to a minimized number of site visits by trained workers, coverage of extensive portions of ground, and easy detection of malfunctions also in adverse weather conditions. Shutting down can be avoided and inconvenience to affected residents kept to a minimum.

  1. Thermal and Nuclear Power Infrastructure

In large-scale power plants, safety is the absolute priority. Drones provide a non-intrusive way to capture high-definition imagery of vertical structures like chimneys and cooling towers to detect cracks or concrete degradation.

Using thermal sensors, it is possible to monitor steam pipes and identify leaks or insulation failures in large-scale steam distribution networks.

  1. Substation Mapping and Digital Twins

We can create Digital Twins of electrical substations; these hyper-accurate 3D models allow engineers to plan equipment upgrades or expansions with centimeter-level spatial awareness, conduct virtual “walkthroughs” for safety training without entering a live high-voltage environment, and document “as-built” conditions for regulatory compliance and insurance.

  1. Cell phone tower inspections:

Drones can look for structural defects, orientation problems and cracks that might cause interruptions to service, providing accurate data by live, high-resolution photography.

  1. Transmission tower inspections:

Where emergencies call, drones can be launched immediately and pass information to maintenance teams, greatly reducing overall inspection time.
